Just type in things like “free photoshop” and see what you get.
You may want to include Cinepaint. Its a fork of the GIMP source and improves upon GIMP by providing support for 16 bit images.

awesome listing of alternates of photoshop.
I didn’t know any of these except for GIMP! Great post Dicky!
nice compilation, but what’s inkscape doing in there? it’s definitely not a photoshop alternative, being a vector drawing program and all…
Some of these look identical to older versions of photoshop. I have used GIMP as a alternative before and it is very good.
And not to forget http://aviary.com for image, color, vector and effects editing + image markup and a powerful screen capture tool.
Kudos to the programmers and developers who have put the work into putting out all these great programs.
I agree, these are great programs. But the title is misleading: these are NOT all PS alternatives, Inkscape ie. is a great vector program, so not for photo manipulating. The correct title would be 15 great and free graphical programs. thanks.
Artweaver is really nice, thank you for sharing.
From my prospective, paint.net is the best compromise as it is 100% free, it has many plugins for effects and it is really easy to use.
