Web-based HTML Editor, WYSIWYG editor, or rich text editor, is a web component that let users enter rich text input within the browser. Most of the time, these html editors are used within content management systems where administrators or authors can easily create posts and contents from the backend system.

    For me, FCKeditor is the best. I like its file manager very much. Its also very featured. I used TinyMCE before and I can compare :)

  3. I absolutely recommend http://xstandard.com/ . It outputs some of the cleanest, strictest XHTML anywhere, encourages accessibility, and has an awesome free version. The paid version gives you upload/filebank, Word cleanup and other stuff. Best editor anywhere.

    Actually the article was really very good and well explored, but did it really mean HTML Editors or text editors because most of them were meant to be text editors.

    Since most users need a very simple layout for most of their stuff, I think markItUp sounds like a nice alternative to tinyMCE, esp. because it runs on jQuery which in most cases is there anyway.

    Has anyone tested it? Does it output proper valid XHTML?

      I am not sure whether markItUp will generates proper valid XHTML or not, since i never use it before. Maybe you can try contact the author.

  7. I find that I get the best results when the text boxes and toolbars look similar to the Microsoft Office suite, as people are used to that and pick up very easily how to use the text editor.

      You are right. People are used to what they had seen everyday. The FreeRichTextEditor is the most similar with Microsoft Office, but you can create theme for other editors so that they look similar with Office too.

    Nice list, I personally prefer TinyMCE due its license flexibility, I mean FCKEditor is commercial, you should pay to redistribute, TinyMCe you can donate according your budget.

    wait these aren’t web based. they require “download” .. i was looking for literally WEB based, like editing right on the screen without downloading and installing. i’m confused.

    I absolutely recommend the http://dewem.com . It’s match more as web-based tool, it’s a simplest multilingual multi-browser visual template-system, where the HTML und CSS are object-oriented handled. See it at FAQ-page in the movie…
