We use icons for our web designs, favicons and also Windows/Mac application. To create or edit an icon, you can use either powerful image editors like Photoshop, Paint.NET, premium icon editors, or just use a free icon editor.
Today, we are going to share 6 Useful Free Icon Editors where you can create and edit your icons for free. Some of them offer advanced features like extract icons from binary for free.
1. Greenfish Icon Editor Pro
Greenfish Icon Editor Pro is a very powerful icon editor. It is portable, with <1.8MB after unzip. It supports layer, able to create animated cursors, offers high-quality filters like Bevel, Drop Shadow and Glow.

2. IconFX
IcoFX is a famous icon editor which comes with a lot of features. For example, it supports Vista icons with PNG compression, batch processing for handling multiple files. Besides these, IcoFX supports resolutions up to 256×256 and able to import/export images from bmp, jpg, gif, png, jp2.

3. Sib Icon Editor
Sib Icon Editor is a free icon utility for Windows. It allows to create and edit icon images and manage icon files and libraries. With Sib Icon Editor, you can create/edit PNG icons, create/manage icon libraries, paste images in various formats directly into icons, extract icons from Windows executable files and even convert Mac icons to Windows format.

4. Stardock IconDeveloper
IconDeveloper is a program that makes it very easy to create your own Windows icons. There are 2 different versions for IconDeveloper:- Free and Enhanced($19.95). The free version is sufficient for normal uses while the Enhanced version adds features to convert other images format to icons, change the color/hue/gamma of icons and batch convert/colorize entire folders of images to icons.

5. aaICO Icon Editor
aaICO Icon Editor is a free, simple but great icon editor for designer. It doesn’t have much features and the interface is simple. This application is suitable for icon designer that just want to do some simple editing jobs.

6. LiquidIcon XP
LiquidIcon XP is yet another free icon editor which offer standard set of image editing tools. It has an icon extractor where you can extract icons from exe or dll files. LiquidIcon XP also offers several image manipulation functions such as Flip, Rotate and Reflect.

I seldom create icon. But i have IconFX installed on my computer.
Here is one for the mac called Pixen as well which I have used quite often.

The list is quite useful, but would be helpful if the title were “6 Free Icon Editors To Create and Edit Icons – For WINDOWS”. At least I’d know to stay away from it… Thanks anyway.

If you are looking for a Mac Icon Editor, you can go for Pixen, which recommended by Klaus.
Icon FX is the best for me. Its really fast and nice designed. Greetings from Munich.

Im using IconFX also, it supports both Vista and Windows 7 icons.
Im always changing my icons as I hate using the default ones, they look so ugly to me. Thanks for the list, I may try out 1 or 2 of the other programs and see what they are like to.
