Do you have the right handle and profile name?

These are perhaps the two most important parts of setting up a Twitter account that is search engine friendly. The handle, a username like @yourbrand, establishes a static url at twitter.com/yourbrand that search engines can index so that future information on your feed can be accessed and linked to quickly and easily. Likewise, your profile name, the name that appears next to your handle in the profile, further establishes your brand. Ideally, both of these names will target keywords related to your interests.

Have you written the right kind of profile?

Secondly, you should take the most important keywords and incorporate them into your profile. Just like any text on the web, your profile can be seen by search engines, so it makes sense to apply the same SEO tactics in this text as you would for any other blog post. Make sure you use all one hundred and sixty characters in your profile, and follow the usual keyword to content ratio.

Do you Tweet for SEO?

Just because you only get one hundred and forty characters for each Tweet doesn’t mean you can’t include some keywords to attract the attention of search engines. Have you ever Googled something and found that one of the first links pointed you to someone’s Tweet? That should tell you that Tweets do get searched, so you should include keywords, especially in the first few words of your Tweet in order to get maximum attention from searchers.

Do you use links?

There has been a lot of discussion about ‘nofollow’ and Twitter, but that shouldn’t discourage you from trying to get traffic and search engine recognition from your links. Because Twitter is so popular now, there are many other third party sites that aggregate Tweets for a particular niche, and these sites can determine their ‘follow’ or ‘nofollow’ policies. Better to count on your link spreading than to give up on linking. Furthermore, the more popular you are on Twitter, the better your link traffic will be. Because of this, you should use a url shortening service that allows you to track stats on your links. I recommend BitLy, which uses search engine friendly 301 Redirects, thus allowing the search engine to index the destination url.

The fact that you are reading this right now means that you are most likely a Drupal user, strongly considering Drupal as your CMS of choice, and/or have a website that needs a serious boost in the traffic department.

You probably know that your target customers are not going to stumble on your article, or your product, or your site if you are listed on page 23 of a Google search for whatever you are trying to sell. You want to make sure that your search rankings are under your control as much as possible, instead of allowing the rankings to wrangle you.

Fortunately, Drupal users have a secret weapon – Drupal itself!

Here are some helpful Drupal SEO tips to put into practice – and if you know all of this already – well, practice makes perfect!

Do This:

1. Use Pathauto Module
Pathauto will be your best friend because it creates search-engine friendly URLs for various kinds of content on your site without requiring the user to manually specify the path alias. Along with the required Token module, you can generate keyword-laden URLs automatically or in bulk.

2. Use <h1> Tags and Title Tags with the Page Title Module
Page Title Module gives you granular control over the page title. You can specify the page title separately to the content’s title. This means you get double SEO keyword bang for your buck!

3. Use XML Sitemap Module
Create a sitemap to help search engines crawl your site in a more intelligent manner, and keep their search results up to date. Plus, the sitemap created is automatically submitted to Google, Ask, Bing, and Yahoo search engines.

4. Optimize your META descriptions with the Nodewords Module
Nodewords Module allows you to set meta tags for each Drupal page, either manually or based on automated settings. Keywords and well organized descriptions “bring order to chaos, define markets, and reveal intent… SEO is a popularity contest for keywords and this is a popularity contest you want to win.” (Ben Finklea, Volacci). Ben is a smart man!

Not That:

1. Don’t leave comments on other sites for the purpose of including a link back to your site. Faux pas! You can actually get your site blocked for pulling a stunt like that, or at the very least it doesn’t help your rankings because these links are usually ‘nofollowed’.

2. Don’t use or build a theme with invalid code or poor markup. You can generally make a safe bet on popular, well-maintained themes from Drupal.org – just take a look at the theme’s issue queue for any problems. Always check out the SEO features of any commercial theme provider or framework you’re considering. Here are some SEO factors to consider when evaluating Drupal themes.

3. Don’t create duplicate content! Drupal For SEO lists several problems that can arise simply from the fact that “Drupal has powerful optimization features built into its architecture. But without care, it can easily generate duplicate content that you might not be aware of.”

• URL Aliases – being able to access the site with both the original url and the alias
• Page titles – having titles that are too similar or identical
• Accessing your site with and without the www
• Printer friendly pages
• Forums and Views that create sortable lists that can generate multiple URLs with duplicate content

Blamcast provides sage advice on how duplicate content is detrimental to your site:

“At the very least, duplicate content can decrease your ranking. Search engines treat links to your page as a vote of confidence. If the links are split between two different addresses, you’re potentially throwing away half your votes…. By decreasing the amount of duplicate content on your site, you drive visitors and links to a smaller, more focused group of pages, leading to better search engine ranking and more traffic.”

Add the Global Redirect module to help avoid common duplicate content issues with Drupal.

4. Don’t be without a blueprint or plan for your site – create a linking structure like the Website Silo Architecture. Drupal For SEO advises that “When you build your website on a solid foundation of vertical market theme research, solid linking structure otherwise known as ‘silo website architecture’ and quality content that provides value to your visitors, you will be miles ahead of the SEO game even before you begin acquiring back links.”

Of course, writing excellent content and providing genuine value to visitors are the real “tricks” to SEO, but I hope these tips will help you get even higher rankings out of your Drupal site!

All in One SEO Pack

All in One SEO Pack provides overwrite control for your blog site, page, post, and category titles, descriptions, and keywords. Perfect because you don’t have to depend on the SEO expertise of the theme developer who sometimes leave these critical elements out of the code, or give you little access to them. Screenshot from my plugin:

The title likely the most important piece of your page for search results. Your blog title is critical since your homepage is the most likely page to rank in search and the title is what will show as the clickable link in search results. Each page/post should have a unique title that describes the page while using keywords you want to rank for. I strongly suggest removing any traces of your main blog title from subpage titles and blog post titles.

The text underneath the clickable link in search results is a meta description (in HTML), the blog tagline (if it’s your blog homepage) and a post exceprt (if an individual blog post). Although the words in this description will not help your rank position, it may entice users to click through to your website. Permalink Structure and Slugs

Almost as important as keywords in the titles are keywords in URLs for ranking in search. A simple way to integrate more keywords into the URLs of your pages is to set the permalink structure under Settings > Permalinks to use categories rather than dates. While most blogs use a standard /year/month/date/post-name format, you would be wise to use a custom /category/post-name format. This is because dates have no valuable words in the URLs to help your rank and the closer your keyword is to the domain name the better. Lastly, dashes still beat underscores. Learn more about URLs in this article from SEOmoz.

You should also take note of the slugs (post name URLs) applied to each blog post, which helps form the full URL. In this case the default, 5-quick-ways-to-blog-seo, could be changed to add or remove keywords as necessary to make the final URL for this most better for search.

Important: By changing your permalink structure or slug after your blog or post is already live, your old URL becomes inaccessible! Any links coming into the old location will be broken and that can hurt your search results. This is not a support article for redirects, but I found this article on 301 redirects using an htaccess file to be helpful.

Google XML Sitemaps Plugin

Sitemaps make Google’s job easier to find and index content on the web and potentially return it in search results. Google (XML) Sitemaps Generator for WordPress put your blog content into an XML code format Google can quickly and easily understand in addition to what it may see from the front end of your website (by reading the traditional text and links on your pages).

With sitemaps your blog posts typically appear more quickly in search results. After installing this plugin my posts appeared in Google within an hour of posting them (instead of a day)! You can see below it notifies all major search engines each time it updates. You can control the frequency and priority of information using this plugin and also what pages to restrict from search (like tag pages, archives, or private areas).

You can also submit the sitemap file to places like Google Webmaster Tools. The more search engines know about your blog, the more edge you have against your competitors.

Data Mining via Lijit Search

Lijit Search offers better visibility to what users type into search engines to reach your website, then type into the search box within your blog once they are on your site. Just installing the plugin does not help you rank better, but knowing the keywords people use to find you and also what they are looking for within your site provides great insight to your audience. For SEO purposes you can create content that aligns with those phrases to reach more people. As an example, if users on my blog search for “key phrase X” then people in the Googleverse are probably searching for that too. So I should write a blog post about “key phrase X” and users on my site and out on Google will rejoice.

Lijit search can also return results from other website sources, for example when user search your website the results can show items from your social sites like YouTube, Twitter, or Digg for example. Nifty.

Alternate Text

Nobody takes the time anymore to optimize their images! Most sites could see decent traffic from Google Images Search if they would just give their images a descriptive name. Not to mention that Google can’t read you image without this text (like a blank hole) and it will weight that text more heavily than other text on the page (probably because there is less imagery on the page than text). Most themes will automatically convert the image title to alternate text so that it shows as readable keywords in the HTML code. A short simple sentence that describes your image will do just fine – no keyword stuffing and don’t repeat the same text for all your images on the page. As a bonus, give your image a good file name since that shows in code too.

And the code will look like this: img src=”golden-gate-bridge-sunset.gif” alt=”Golden Gate Bridge through the clouds at sunset” In the end, when my image code looks like this, you can imagine it even though you can’t view it. Don’t you want the same for Google?

One thing before we start: Understand this is a relative game. You don’t have to reach some absolute goal to rank #1 for a particular keyword. All you need to do is to be ‘better’ than the guy who is on the #1 spot.

Build domain authority

Every link to any page on your domain is counted as a ‘vote’ by the search engines. You should focus on getting links from as many (reputable, not spam) domains as possible.

There’s been some research which confirms what I’m saying above.

Build individual page authority

Use the 80/20 rule (I’ll refer to it here as 90/10 because it is a more accurate measure for the web world.) Focus on building links on the top 10 pages that rank for the phrases you want in the search engines.

Before search engines started counting entire domains (domain authority), they pretty much focused on raking individual pages and the domain had not so big influence. This is true to some extent today.

Be smart enough to know when you’re getting lucky

Focus on the winners, not the losers. How many times have we stopped doing what’s working and focused on what’s NOT working? Well, from experience you know that what’s not working is probably not going to start working soon. So focus on what brings you results (that will be smart percentage of your efforts, refer to the 90/10 rule.)

10% of your pages probably get around 50-90% of the traffic. Instead of focusing most of your efforts on pages that don’t rank, focus on improving those pages that already rank! Remember the phrase “The rich get richer?” Same with the SERPs.

Here’s another good analogy: did you know that Google has around 100 services? You probably haven’t heard of most of them. What would happen if Google started focusing the majority of their efforts on products that are not so popular instead of getting new features for their main search engine and Gmail? I’m sure they would be surpassed by other competitors and go out of business sooner or later.

3. Missing Metadata Module

Missing Metadata Module is a fantastic tool for making sure that every article you publish has appropriate meta description text. Once installed, this extension adds an extra panel to your Joomla Administrator interface, listing any articles lacking appropriate meta info. You’ll be shocked by how many of your pages are suffering from a lack of meta data.

4. Joomap

Joomap, an extension that’s really simple to configure and use, lets you create a sitemap and submit it to all major search engines. Suitable for both beginners and experts, it displays the normal Menu Structure, Content Categories, Sections and Virtuemart Categories in a hierarchical tree or a Google sitemaps list. We’ve heard no reports of errors with this extension, but there’s no general forum, so help is a little hard to come by.

5. Auto-Frontpage

Auto-Frontpage ensures that your site is updated regularly, which Google and other search engines love. It automatically publishes all of your new articles, saving you time and effort. When there’s nothing new to add, it republishes one of your old articles, keeping both visitors and search engines happy. If you’re not changing the content of your site on a regular basis, you’ll never achieve the best page ranking results.

6. Website Name

This extension lets you display your website name in the title on each page, which is vital for effective SEO. Simple, but effective, it can be installed within 30 seconds and set up even more quickly. You can even configure it so that your website name is displayed to the left or right of your page title.

7. JoomSEO

This great extension automatically puts all the right keywords in all the right places for superb SEO. It’s highly customizable, letting you decide exactly how you want your meta keywords, descriptions, titles and heading tags to appear. Show or hide your site name, change the number of keywords in a title, change the length of a title or specify bad words to be excluded from your keywords list.

8. SEO Canonicalisation

Once installed, SEO Canonicalisation redirects all users to your chosen hostname, regardless of the domain name they used. It completely negates the need for fiddly .htaccess redirects. With relatively few bugs reported and an inbuilt Check Settings option, this extension comes highly recommended.

9. Title Manager

Like Website Name, Title Manager makes it easy for Joomla users to customize their browser titles, adding their site name to the right or left of each page name. Available in Turkish, Dutch and German besides English, this extension is easily accessible to everyone.

10. Unicode Slugs

With Unicode Slugs, you can easily add accents, capital letters, glyphs and foreign characters to your Joomla URL, making it easier for users, the world over, to get to grips with your domain name. Rest assured, Google has absolutely no problem deciphering Unicode Slugs-generated domain names either.

11. J!Redirect301

For SEO and brand awareness, you’ll want all visitors to your site to end up on your primary domain, otherwise things can get very confusing. If you need to redirect several domains hosted on a single server to one main domain, then this extension is the one for you.

12. iJoomla SEO

iJoomla SEO is the most comprehensive and polished extension in this list. It offers far too many tools to mention, but the best one in my opinion is Keyword Manager. In an instant, the Keyword Manager gives you a snapshot of your Google performance (rank and change in rank) based on all of the words you’ve specified in your title meta tags. At $99, iJoomla SEO doesn’t come cheap, but it offers the whole SEO package.

13. Article-Generator

Article Generator ensures your site is frequently updated with fresh content. This extension, which costs 9.99 euros, generates articles based on keywords and sources that you specify. You can set up Article Generator to create articles with links removed, author removed, links deleted, advertising added, expiration and even the original article integrated with a lightbox effect. Perhaps the best thing about this extension is that it’s very well supported. Questions are always answered within 24 hours.

14. RSSeo!

RSSeo! is well worth its 49 euro price tag. Besides letting you monitor your own site’s SEO efforts, it lets you monitor those of your competitors. You can easily index all of your site’s pages; change meta keywords, descriptions and titles on the fly; get an SEO grade for each individual page; create sitemaps; and set redirects for old links. Essentially, it does everything!

15. sh404SEF

sh404SEF is by far the most popular Joomla extension for URL management. Download it and you’ll quickly see why. With ease, users can create short-and-sweet search engine- and human ear-friendly URLs. They can also remove duplicate URLs, customize page titles and descriptions, and satisfy Google SEO recommendations. What’s more, sh404SEF offers complete protection against flooding attacks, spamming of input forms, malicious page requests and other things which make web development a misery.

This Link Checker looks for issues in links, anchors and referenced objects in a Web page, or recursively on a whole Web site.

2. Link Validation Spider

Simply enter your blog or website URL in the textbox and the spider will then go to your website to read and check for broken links. This spider doesn’t crawl links inside frames or Javascript or flash.

3. Broken Link Checker from iWebTool

This is a simple and easy to use broken link checker from iWebTool. There is a simple tutorial on how to use this tool. iWebTool has a lot of tools for webmasters, including some SEO tools which i think worth a look if you have time.

4. Broken Link Checker from AddMe.com

In order to use this service, you need to provide them your email address and categories of your website. Enter your URL and other necessary details, they will analyze your website for broken links and then send you a link for the completed report.

5. LinkTiger

LinkTiger provides advanced link checking features such as email you when the broken links are found and has a dashboard with interactive interface. It manages to scan PDF, CSS, Flash and MS Office files for broken links too.

6. 2bone Link Checker

This link checker will only test regular HTML links. There are 2 different modes for you to choose: Express lane and ‘I can wait’ service. The Express lane will give faster result with 10 links being examine per page while the other mode will display all links all at once, with a longer waiting period.

7. RankQuest SEO Toolbar

The Rankquest SEO Toolbar provides you quick access to more than 30 intuitive SEO tools. Example of the tools are Validation tools, Content tools, Meta tools, Popularity tools, Search Engine tools and SEM tools.

8. Quirk Search Status

SearchStatus is a toolbar extension for Firefox and Mozilla that allows you to see how any and every website in the world is performing. It provide a lot of useful information such as Google PR, Alexa Rank, Compete Rank, mozRank, WhoIs, quick link to robos.txt and sitemap.xml, and etc. You can easily access these information from the Searc Status icon at the status bar.

9. HTML Validator

I had covered this plugin from my previous post about useful Firefox plugins for Web designers and developers. So, why i am saying this plugin is useful for SEO? It is because errors in the HTML structure will affects your page ranking and this tool can helps you to validate those errors. Basically, you should ask your designers to perform validation using this tool before he passes the themes to you.

10. SEOpen

Provides some basic tools to help with search engine optimization. Including google backlinks, yahoo backlinks, PageRank check, http header viewer, and more. All features are available by right-clicking on an open area of a web page, or by using the included toolbar.

11. Google Global Firefox Extension

Google Global Firefox Extension lets users to view organic and paid Google search results as they appear in almost any location on Earth. You can access this tool from the content menu or toolbar.

12. Foxy SEO Tool

Foxy SEO Tool is a free, open source Firefox add-on that offers tools for search engine optimization (SEO), web traffic and page analysis, for webmasters and web professionals.

13. Socialphile

Socialphile Firefox Extension assists users with comfortable searching based on ranking of each search result at social news websites. It allows users to submit search result directly to social news websites. Currently, Socialphile only supports Digg.com, but the developers will add more social news websites in the future.

14. KGen

KGen allows you to get the most important keywords of a webpage. It’s really usefull to analyze the SEO strategy of your competitors or simply know what’s the main subject of a webpage.

15. Niche Watch Tool

Niche Watch Tool gives you backlinks number, indexed pages, keyword occurences on the page, page rank, all in anchor, all in title and all in text rank for both domain and webpage information.

16. User Agent Switcher

User Agent Switcher is a useful Firefox plugin which able to switch the user agent of the browser. Users can use this tool to pretend themselves to be a search engine and see what search engine sees the webpage.

It is totally up to you that how much plugins you need to install in order to get a better search engine ranking. But try to keep the amount to minimum so that you won’t crash your server. Today, we are going to look into 10 WordPress plugins that will increase your search engine ranking.

1. All in One SEO Pack

This plugin enables certain modifications to your WordPress blog to achieve Search Engine Optimization. For example, you can customize your post title, post description and post tags for individual post. Furthermore, this plugin also has features such as auto generates Cononical URLS for your entire WordPress site and select index/noindex for various archives pages.

2. Broken Link Checker

This plugin will monitors links in your site and list out links that don’t work or any missing images. The reason why this plugin is essential is because you may write an article and link to www.domain.com. This link may goes down in future and become dead ends for search engine. By using this plugin, you can get notifications immediately and remove these dead ends.

3. Google XML Sitemaps Generator

This plugin will create a Google sitemaps compliant XML-Sitemap of your WordPress blog. A sitemap will help search engine spiders to crawl your content. The generated sitemap also supported by other search engine such as Yahoo, MSN and Ask.com.

4. SEO Friendly Images

SEO Friendly Images is a WordPress optimization plugin which automatically updates all images with proper alt and title attributes. By having a proper alt and title tag for your images, you can get more traffic from Google Image Search. This blog had gain quite a large number of traffic from Google Image Search by doing so.

Although internal linking in your own site help navigate user to your posts, but it actually decrease your page rank because of the self pings effect. This plugin will eliminate this effect by removing all pingbacks from own site and only receive back links from other sites.

6. Enforce www. Preference

One of the important search engine fact is that search engines will treat www.domain.com and domain.com as two different site. You can easily overcome this issue by enforcing this plugin. Note: All in One SEO Pack will overcome this issue for you. Make sure you check the Canonical option.

7. Platinum SEO Pack

This plugin covers all the features of All in One SEO Pack, but it does include more options compare to All in One SEO Pack. For example, it adds index, noindex, follow or nofollow, noodp, noydir, noarchive, and nosnippet meta tags to any post/page. But, most of my clients prefer All in One SEO Pack as they are used to it and reluctant to change.

8. SEO Smart Links

SEO Smart Links can automatically link keywords and phrases in your posts and comments with corresponding posts, pages, categories and tags on your posts. This will help navigating your visitors to other posts. The interlinking process happens automatically and what you need to do is configure it through the administration settings panel.

9. SEO Slugs

Long URL may have a better ranking in search engines because it will contain more keywords. But search engines like Google tends to ignore some common keywords such as “you”, “a”, “the”, and “what”. Removing these keywords will improve your search engine ranking. This plugin will automatically remove these unused common keywords for you.

10. Robots Meta

Robots Meta enables users to control which pages/posts can be indexed and which can’t. For example, you may want to prevent indexing of your search results or your category pages. It is because some search engines will see them as duplicate content and decrease your page rank.
