Depth of field can be defined as the range of distance around the focal plane (subject) that will produce a clear and sharp image. To obtain a better final image that you are trying to capture, the depth of field effect is essential to gain a better shot. Depth of field is a very powerful tool and concept to use and it can definitely help you capture that perfect shot.
In the photography profession, depth of field is the amount of distance between the nearest and farthest objects that appear in acceptably sharp focus in a photograph. Using depth of field lets you have a focus on one of the objects in a photo by giving it more focus and emphasis. A preferred selection Depth of field (“DOF”) in a focused subject in an image can be quite subjective, based on the discretion of the photographer. Always keep in mind that adequate selection of DOF for one situation, application may be unacceptable for another photographer. It is all a matter of personal preference when trying to determine the appropriate use of DOF to enhance an effect in a photograph.
In order to be able to use depth of field to make images better, a photographer need to understand what depth of field is and how it works. Depth of field is basically the distance in front of and behind the focal plane (or subject) that is in acceptable focus. It is not a sharp abrupt change from sharp to unsharp. It is a gradual transition from the sharp, in focus area, to the soft out of focus area.
A few factors may have a direct relationship with depth of field, they are:
- The diaphragm opening of the lens (the aperture).
- The focal length of the lens in used.
- Image size (it has a direct relation to distance).
