There are thousands of spammers flood your blog everyday, and spam comments is a serious problem for all bloggers. Everyday, we need to go through the comments and read them to make sure these comments are not spam. These spam comments not only waste our time, but also the internet bandwidth.
Today, we are going to look into 12 great Wordpress anti spam plugins, which will save your time by blocking spam bots to comment on your blog, prevent them from stealing email address from your articles, and help you fight against these spam bots.
1. Akismet
Akismet is the most popular anti spam plugin for Wordpress. In order to use Akismet, you have to register an account at Wordpress.com and get the API key. When new comment come to your blog, Akismet will check the comment through the web service to determine if it is spam. Suspected comments will be marked as spam and users can go through them later.
2. AVH First Defense Against Spam
This plugin has a different approach to check spam. When visitors come to your blog, this plugin will first check their IPs, to see whether these IPs exist in the database served by stopforumspam.com, the Project Honey Pot or a local blacklist. By this way, the spammer can be blocked before the content of your site is served.
3. Defensio Anti-Spam
Defensio is a spam filtering web service that you can use to protect your blog or web application from comment spam. Using Defension with other anti spam plugins will cause problem. So, please deactivate them in order to use this plugin.
4. WP-Hashcash
WP hashcash prevents comment spam by force the commentators to additional compute a value from javascript and submit it along with the comment. Besides this, it also helps to prevent trackback spam by comparing the IP of the trackback’s url with the senders IP, and by looking in the trackback’s url for a link back to your post.
5. Math Comment Spam Protection
This simple plugin will ask the commentators a math question before they post their comments. It doesn’t require Javascript or cookie to work.
6. bcSpamBlock
bcSpamBlock is a light Wordpress plugin to fight spam. Users with Javascript enabled will not see any difference while users with Javascript disabled will need to copy and paste a small string into a textbox. Basically the plugin will generates a random ID and then encrypt it. When the comment form is submitted, the plugin will re-encrypt the random ID and compare to make sure it matches the crypt value.
7. DNS-anti-spam
This plugin will check the comentator IP to determine whether it is posted from blacklisted IPs, and then check the content of the comment against a huge list of known spammer websites.
8. WP Spam Hitman
WP Spam Hitman is based on set of rules and concept of hitpoint. With right set of rules and hitpoint level you can eliminate most or even all of the spam on you blog.
9. WP-SpamFree
An extremely powerful anti-spam plugin for WordPress that eliminates comment spam, including trackback and pingback spam. There is an interesting feature called Enchanced Comment Blocklist, which able to blovk the comment if the comment contains blacklisted keywords.
10. Bad Behavior
Bad Behavior is designed to act as a gatekeeper and it is able to prevent spammers from reading your content. Bad Behavior analyzes the delivery method as well as the software the spammer is using.
11. Email Protect
Email Protect will automatically change email addresses in your blog to other alternatives such as image to prevent spam bots from harvesting them.
12. spam-stopper
spam-stopper able to keep spammer robots from posting on your blog. Users can create their custom question so that spammer robots cannot answer and prevent them from posting on the blog.
I’ve always been a big fan of WP reCaptcha (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-recaptcha/)… they also have a great “Mailhide” which can help reduce spam by only allowing people who enter the captcha phrase from seeing your email address.
A little less annoying than an email obfuscator.

I must say I haven’t use a lot of antispam plugins except askimet. Maybe I will have to try others if I get spam problems on my design inspiration gallery.

Three plugins, in combination, will block almost all spam.
Cookies for Comments: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/cookies-for-comments/ will block comment spam from automated posting bots by using a nifty cookie/stylesheet trick.
Simple Trackback Validation: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/simple-trackback-validation/ runs a simple algorithm that blocks almost all known spam bots from send spam via the trackback door.
Akismet: Gets everything that makes it through either of those.
You don’t need captchas (they are counter-productive, since captchas drive away legitimate comments), you don’t need “math tricks” (since spam bots have gotten smart enough to easily defeat those), and you don’t need complex spam prevention techniques like half the plugins in your list.
As Matt would put it, the first two plugins I listed above are “club” solutions. But they do work, for now. And Akismet is not a “club”, it’s a real solution, and will continue to work when the club fails.
So I’d skip the rest of the ones you listed and just go with those three. They’re proven and effective, for now.
You can use any of the following or a combination of any of them. It pretty much helps you to save a lot of time to fight spam comments in your blog.
