Gigabyte Aero 15x-BK4 and Acer Predator 17: A Comparison Summary
Before delving into the detailed reviews of the two ace gaming models, let’s have a quick look at how they differ.
Gigabyte Aero15x-BK4 VS Acer Predator 17
If you are considering buying one of these products, it might be beneficial for you to know all the crests and troughs of both the products and understand their usability niches. Following are some critical criteria from which I have reviewed the products concurrently. Here you go.
1. Build and Design:
The Gigabyte Aero 15x is one of those durable gaming notebooks that come with just the right specifications – for accommodating both work and play. Weighing almost 4.79 pounds, the laptop appears sleek, thin and professional.
The lid is 0.8 inches thick made of black carbon fiber with the Gigabyte logo in silver that is embellished with nanolithography giving it a metal look.
It does not have any fancy look like the Predator 17. Instead has a very professional look to it. It’s one of the best laptops when it comes to portability.
Speaking on the Acer Predator 17, it is somewhat good support as much as gaming is concerned for a notebook. The notebook remains pretty glitzy when it comes to its design. However, it rises as a complete winner in a tight, crowded field.
Unlike its competing contenders, it has been intentionally designed with giant speaker grills and a fan exhaust chambers that you could see over the top.
The total weight of the laptop goes to around 3.5 kg and thickness around 40mm which is absolutely not desirable even if you go by gaming standards.
However, Acer has done one thing remarkably good to this model. The Cooler Master–branded ‘Frost Core’ is actually an added fan that offers more cooling to the Blu-ray drive.
However, if there is a single element of complaint in the model, it is the compromised build. You can easily find that the keyboard, wrist rest around the keyboard and the screen hinge is noticeably cheap and not high end. They tend to flex when a little pressure is applied to them.
Verdict: From the build point of view, the Acer Predator 17 isn’t merely the best choice. However, if you consider design, it can prove to be one of the best options for gaming-specific laptops.
2. Screen and Display:
Gigabyte’s 15.6” full HD display definitely looks vibrant and accurate with X- Rite Pantone color calibrated for its help. The panel appears extraordinarily bright and detailed. The display on the Gigabyte Aero 15X measures 324 nits of brightness on my light meter.
The predator display comes in a 17.3-inch panel with same Full HD resolution as that of the former. The relatively low 0.3 nits black levels and bright 344 nits white levels give the predator a usable 993:1 contrast ratio, which is at par gaming requirements.
Finally wrapping up the comparison review of the two products here is a list of pros and cons that you would face while using each of them. All these features together make the Acer predator one of the best buys for gaming.
Verdict: Keeping in mind the element of focus, screen, and display, the Acer predator 17 bags away from the position over gigabyte’s aero 15x.
3. Speakers and Sounds:
The speakers of the Aero 15X are competent and high quality but nothing remarkably distinct to mention about.
The last time I use them to hear Beatles music, they were just loud enough to cover the labs, and the vocals and drums were clear. The bassline was although less significant and lacked the punch.
Acer predators one of the most beautiful addition is its 4.2 speaker system. The full set up combines four speakers, 2 subwoofers offering impactful audio.
Verdict: It is a sheer win for predator for its high-quality audio system.
4. Keyboard and Touchpad:
The keys on the Aero 15 X are nice and punchy rendering a satisfying click sound after each press of the buttons.
They offer 1.6 mm of travel and 80 gms of actuation force the effective pressing of the keys. The only disappointing point in the whole affair that I found is that the whole of the keyboard is too compact for usage. It significantly lowers your typing speed. I often see myself hitting the wrong key while typing.
Again, the 4.1 X 2.4-inch touchpad is smooth and accurate but fail to support all the Windows 10’s gestures. While it allows me to use actions like a two-finger scroll or pinch to zoom, it fails to activate a three or four finger gesture activation of Cortana or the Action Center.
In this aspect, the Acer predator keyboard is pretty good. Apart from having a fully backlit body, it also sports a great RGB main keyboard with five programmable macro keys along its sides.
This readily makes it an ideal one for FPS gamers. Speaking of the keys, they are partially automatic. This is definitely a cut above its contemporary devices like that of Gigabyte’s predator. Offering well-spaced and fast action support, the keyboard of this system is ideal for both typing and gaming.
The trackpad unlike Acer’s Helios 300, is suitable and amply spacious and firm to touch. The inclusion of left-right keys gives an additional advantage of canceling out the occurrence of typing mistakes majorly.
Verdict: The Acer predator is undoubtedly the winner when it comes to rendering the most comfortable keyboards.
5. Performance & Benchmarks:
Equipped with a 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7-7700HQ CPU, 16GB RAM, and a 512GB M.2 PCIe solid-state drive, The Aero 15X is a good performer that can multitask without breaking a sweat.
The last time I remember using it, I had 28 tabs open in Google Chrome simultaneously with star wars running from my laptop memory in VLC media player. All of these were super smooth on the run without any time lag or hanging. To quote a fact, the product earned an overall score of 14,265 on Geekbench 4 complete performance test absolutely beating the mainstream average of 11,003.
Again, it took a total of 15 seconds to copy 4.97 GB of files at a rate of 339.3 megabytes per second.
My take on the Predator 17 is somewhat outshining the Gigabyte aero 15X. With its high-end components, the tested Predator 17 G9 793 70PJ is comfortable at the top of any gaming requirements.
A quad-core processor with Hyper-Threading, a direct-12 GPU with 8 GB of VRAM, and 32 G of working memory provide enough space for the next gaming hits to be stored on your computer. This comes to be more effective when you lower down the resolution from Ultra HD to Full HD in an emergency.
Perhaps the only area where the predator lacks competency is the SSD performance with a disappointing record of 522.2 MB/s read, and 160.6 MB/s write speeds in the CrystalDiskMark benchmark.
Verdict: Although having more memory space and a high compatibility rate for gaming, the Gigabyte Aero has better performance for its better performing processor.
6. Heat and Noise:
Heat dissipation is a common issue with gaming laptops, especially in sleek models. However, this is not the case for Aero 15 X.
The product stands strong even after the 15 minutes long run of HD video from YouTube with a surrounding temperature of 27 degree Celsius and average network connectivity. The noise of the fans is pretty audible. You can see no large measures taken by the company to cancel it out.
Taking heat emissions into account, Predator has installed an extra fan called the FrostCore which can be inserted instead of the optical drive to balance and regulate heating of the device.
The noise development of the predator is no remarkable. Ranging from almost 32 dB in idle mode to 42 during loading it will surely not create a massive problem for your use.
Verdict: Considering both of the heat dissipation and noise cancellation system, I would definitely recommend Predator to be the better product.
7. Input and Output Ports:
Despite the size that Gigabyte Aero has, you would find plenty of ports. On the left side, are a series of ports starting with an Ethernet jack, and a USB 3.0 port.
You also have the standard options that you could pretty much find about anywhere these days, from HDMI and Mini DisplayPort outputs to a headphone jack. You also have an SD card slot, along with a Thunderbolt 3 port.
In this regard, the Acer predator has considerably done an excellent job too. Owing to the spacious design of the product, you will be able to find as many as four USB 3 ports, which includes a USB 3.1 Type – C connector. You also have access to the standard HDMI port along with DisplayPort outputs and an SD card reader.
Verdict: Although this was a tough fight between the two, Aero tends to win the deal in terms of ports.
8. Battery Life:
Battery life is one of the critical elements when gaming is related to notebooks and laptops. Gigabyte’s Aero 15X is a sheer winner in this regard.
Although you need to plug in for gaming, you can expect to get a fixed amount of work and web browsing completed without a wire attached to your device.
On the Laptop Battery Test, it lasted for some good 7 hours and 31 minutes outshining all of its competitions by a considerable margin.
In terms of battery life, the same cannot be said for Acer’s Predator 17. Depending upon the display brightness and system demands, the runtime of the laptop ranges from 1.5 hours to 5.5 hours without plugging in. During a Windows normal operation, you can expect it to last for a good 3–4 hours.
Verdict: The battery life of Gigabyte’s Aero 15X is undoubtedly the best option when it comes to battery life.
9. Pricing or budget:
Gigabyte has priced Aero 15X laptop at an introductory price of $2,199 on Amazon.com. For the price that it is offered, its performance quality is undoubtedly strong. It lets you equal competence for both work and gaming. An addition to the performance is its absolutely fantastic battery life.
Acer’s Predator 17 has been introduced to us at a starting price of $2,399.99 on Amazon. Although, a good performer for gaming with robust audio systems, this model is slightly unfit for work due to its bulky design. Thus, one cannot use this for both works and play with equal comfort levels.
Verdict: Taking into the significant pros and cons of both the products, I would suggest going for the Aero 15X if your basic need involves both work and gaming.
However, if the case is specifically for gaming, then Predator 17 is a better option.
10. Customer Support:
Gigabyte’s Aero 15 X sells a two-year warranty. One of the notable features of this Programme is that on your successful enrollment in the warranty program Gigabyte plants a tree on the honor of your name.
Acer’s Predator comes with a two year limited warranty period. However, for me the customer support for Acer’s Predator worked much stronger than that of Gigabyte’s Aero 15 X. The correspondence is much more responsive, and my problems with the speakers were addressed much faster as compared to the former.
11. Graphics card and Gaming:
Gigabyte’s Aero 15X uses an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 MaxQ GPU with a 6GB of VRAM. Max-Q models are designed such that they are power efficient and quiet. AT the same time, they enable a thin chassis, so that you can expect performance somewhere between a regular 1070 and a 1080p.
When I tried my experience with Middle-earth: Shadow Of war, I got around 30 frames per second along with an excellent 1080p resolution. Sure, there was a bit of screen tearing, but overall, there were no significant issues that could be game-breaking.
The Acer’s Predator 17 is equipped with the GeForce GTX 1060 aiding to the Full HD resolution qualifying fully for 4K gaming. However, if you are interested in optimizing the total power of Predator’s performance caliber, you have the option to adjust the clock speed with the already installed PredatorSense tool.
In the faster mode, a range of speed between 1513 and 1715 MHz is achieved. The “turbo” mode even accelerates this to further between 1583 to 1785 MHz. Thus, if we say as per gaming efficiency there are no significant hassles that are to be felt with the product.
While playing the Witcher 3 role-playing game, there was nothing remarkable to term as ‘disturbance.’ However, a little lag in action may be felt while there is a drop off in the Turbo.
Verdict: As far as the graphics card is concerned, Gigabyte’s Aero 15X is the better choice. However, if you consider gaming as a whole, Predator would be my personal choice.
With Gigabyte’s Aero 15X, the webcam is one of the significant drawbacks. You should not even go to consider Skyping or streaming without an external webcam. With a very disheartening position, right under the display, it produces very dark and pixelated photos that are no way desirable for a webcam. The total resolution of this is around 720 pixel.
Although Acer’s predator 17 comes in the same resolution of 720 fps like that of Aero 15X, the positioning of the webcam is better. It is positioned in the top of the lid.
Verdict: In terms of the webcam, the predator wins the battle due to its better positioning.
The Gigabyte’s Aero 15X – BK4 has the Intel Core i7-7700HQ enabling faster and smooth system working.
Acer optimizes the full power of Intel’s Kaby – Lake Generation, and takes advantage of the current favorable situation and provides the predator series with a new CPU.
Verdict: When it comes to processor, the Gigabyte Aero 15X –BK4 has a better performing processor with Intel Core i7-7700HQ than that of Acer’s Predator 17with Intel Core i7-6700HQ.
14. Disk space:
The Gigabyte Aero 15X has a memory of 500 GB.
On the other hand, the predator comes with an inbuilt space (ROM) the 500GB SSD and a 1000gn HDD. Thus, it has ample space for all the new hits of gaming for you to keep on your device.
Verdict: Considering its disk space, the predator allows you much more comfortable movement in terms of storage of files. You will be able to run HD quality games without hanging.
I had run the middle earth: Shadow of war when my laptop disk space was full reaching almost 70 percent of the disk space. Despite, I did not face any trouble running the game. It was smooth.
Keeping in mind all the essential elements of both the products, I think that if you are to consider a laptop specifically for gaming purpose, Acer’s Predator 17 is the ideal and fancy one meeting its ends. However, if you want a multi-purpose laptop targeting at both your work solutions and also play, then Gigabyte’s Aero 15 X is the better choice amongst the two.
